OCEANOGRAPHIC ASSISTANT (BAND LEVEL 5)

DUTIES
Under the direction of the Department Head, the successful applicant will be required to exercise a considerable degree of initiative and judgement in the performance and coordination of various activities relating to oceanographic field work. Duties include designing oceanographic underwater moorings; reviewing information received from oceanographic equipment; conducting analysis of data; developing computer interface to assist in data processing from oceanographic equipment; operating a variety of oceanographic equipment i.e. current meters, acoustic profiles, salinometers, underwater cameras; calibrating and testing equipment; coordinating repair and maintenance of equipment; coordinating the shipment of research equipment to various locations for field trips; maintaining considerable contact with researchers, staff and students dealing with logistics for field trips; illustrating equipment operation to researchers, staff and students; acting as technician in charge during field trips on research vessels; providing instruction and direction to researchers, staff and students while conducting research on vessels; ensuring necessary data and samples are obtained; liaising with representatives from external research institutes; representing the MUN research team during field trips; controlling research equipment inventory and storage space; and performing other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in oceanographic research support; graduation from an approved university with a degree in physics, engineering, geophysics or physical oceanography; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Knowledge of repair, maintenance, handling and operation of oceanographic equipment and knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved in oceanographic field work is required.
SALARY $37,988-$53,267 per annum (CUPE Local 1615)
