Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS)
Who should attend this course?
Any Memorial University employee (both administrative and academic) or student that work with or in close proximity to WHMIS controlled chemicals.
For employees and students working with or near hazardous chemicals to know how to safely handle, use, store, and dispose of the specific hazardous chemicals used at the workplace to understand the requirements for labeling and how to consult Material Safety Data Sheets management at each workplace must annually review the adequacy of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training and provide refresher training.
PLEASE NOTE: The Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) is being implemented by Canada and this alignment will change WHMIS-related laws (the Hazardous Products Act and Controlled Products Regulations).
Health Canada is the government body responsible for making the required changes to the WHMIS related laws. Final regulations are expected to be published in the Canada Gazette Part II in 2014. Health Canada’s goal is to have the updated WHMIS laws in force by 2015 or later. There will be new training requirements for GHS in with implementation starting in January? 2015. There will be a requirement to complete the new GHS training course when it is available in 2015.

Completion requirements: 80% on online quiz (3 attempts given)
Course includes: Certification issued by Memorial University. Once registered, the course will stay activated on your D2L account and can be used as a reference or refreshed on a regular basis.
Cost: This course is offered free of charge to all employees and students of Memorial University that require it for work and study.
