WHMIS is a Canada-wide information system for ensuring all workers are informed about the hazards associated with chemicals and other hazardous materials they use.
WHMIS is supported by federal and provincial acts and regulations.
The Department of Health & Safety will assist various departments in meeting their obligations under WHMIS regulations by assisting with the procurement of Material Safety Data Sheets, labeling and employee training.
Ultimate responsibility for ensuring compliance with WHMIS requirements rests with the individual department head.
