Exploits Valley Regional Workshop

Giant Squid

The Harris Centre’s ninth Regional Workshop was held in partnership with the Exploits Valley Economic Development Corporation (Zone 12) on November 23rd, 2007 at Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador. Attendees included participants from Memorial University as well as a variety of stakeholders from Zone 12. The purpose of this workshop was to promote Memorial University as a resource for regional policy and development throughout the province through research, teaching and outreach activities, as well as to identify future opportunities within the Zone in which Memorial University could become involved.
Over seventy people attended the Regional Workshop and the broad range of participants from Memorial University coupled with the diverse group of local stakeholders made for an informative, educational, and rewarding experience for those involved.

There were a total of 42 follow-up opportunities identified at the workshop – 9 in Rural Medicine, 19 in Education/Labour Market Development, and 14 in Natural Resources. These opportunities will now go through the Harris Centre’s follow-up process for ideas generated at the workshops.

The workshop was held in conjunction with a Memorial Presents forum on the matter of rural health care, with a keynote address given by Dr. James Rourke of MUN’s Faculty of Medicine, entitled "Building a Healthy Tomorrow: Health Care in Rural in Newfoundland and Labrador".
