Synergy Session: Australia Immigrants and International Students-What can we learn?
With Sonja Knutson
Friday, March 14, 2014, 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm
Board of Regents Boardroom, AA-2029, Faculty of Arts, Memorial University, St. John's
In January, the Conference Board of Canada organized a study tour of Australia with a group of settlement agency directors, foreign credential recognition associations, and colleges and universities to examine what Canada can learn from the Australian experience. Sonja Knutson, Director of the International Centre, accompanied the delegation and would like to share what she learned with other practitioners who work directly with immigrants and international students. The format will be informal, with opportunity for questions throughout. The three areas Sonja would like to address are: The expression of interest (slated to begin in Canada in 2015); international student transition to the labour market; and settlement and integration of immigrants. The outcome of the information sharing will be to surface specific concerns or issues which could impact our province
Sonja Knutson is the Director of the International Centre and Special Advisor to the President on International Affairs at Memorial University of Newfoundland. As such, she develops and coordinates the deepening of partnerships with institutions and organizations within Canada and around the world.

She also leads the cross-cultural diversity training for faculty, staff and students through collaboration with Human Resources and Student Affairs and Services.

She is an instructor with Queen’s University (Ontario) International Educator’s Training program, is serving a second term on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Bureau for International Education, and a two-year term with the NAFSA International Education Leadership Knowledge Community.
