CONTEXTE La
Société des oeuvres de mer, fondée en 1894 par
le docteur Jean-Baptiste Charcot, est un organisme qui s'occupait du
bien-être physique et spirituel des pêcheurs français
sur les Bancs de Terre-Neuve vers la fin du XIXe et au XXe siècles.
Elle équipait des navires pour porter secours aux bâtiments
de pêche. En 1889, le navire de la Société des oeuvres
de mer, le Saint-Pierre II, commandé par
le capitaine Populaire, a parcouru non seulement le Grand Banc, mais
aussi une bonne partie du French Shore, c'est-à-dire la partie
de la côte de Terre-Neuve où jusqu'en 1904 la France jouissait
du droit de prendre et de sécher du poisson. Il
semblerait que les photographies présentées ici aient
été prises par le médecin à bord du Saint-Pierre II, Du Bois Saint Sévrin,
au cours de cette campagne de 1898, mais ce n'est qu'une supposition
(voir le site de L. Girardin noté ci-dessous). Le photographe
a pris un grand nombre d'images non seulement du French Shore, mais aussi
des Bancs et de Saint-Pierre. Les photographies exposées ici sont
celles du French Shore. AU SECOURS! Si vous reconnaissez le site d'une ou plusieurs de ces photos, nous serions très heureux de l'apprendre. | BACKGROUND The Société des oeuvres de mer, founded in 1894 by Dr. Jean-Baptiste Charcot, is an organization devoted to the physical and spiritual well-being of French fishermen on the Banks of Newfoundland towards the end of the 19th and in the 20th centuries. It sent hospital ships to provide assistance to fishing vessels. In 1898, the ship of the Société des oeuvres de mer Saint-Pierre II under the command of Captain Populaire, travelled not just over the Grand Banks but also over a large part of the French Shore, i.e. that part of the coast of Newfoundland where up to 1904 France had the right to catch and dry fish. It appears that the photographs shown here were taken by the doctor on board the Saint-Pierre II, Du Bois Saint Sévrin, during that voyage of 1898, but that is only a supposition (see L. Girardin's site noted below). The photographer took a large number of photographs, not just of the French Shore but also of the Banks and St. Pierre. The images shown here are those of the French Shore. HELP! If you recognize the location of one or more of these photographs, we would be delighted to know about it.
