Marine Habitat Mapping
Marine benthic environments, and benthic biodiversity, can be mapped efficiently using multibeam sonar. Depth and bottom type are directly indicated by the acoustic signal. The composition and diversity of benthic habitats is tightly linked to both depth and bottom type. New research at Memorial developed methods for mapping fjord habitats using multibeam sonar. Benthic habitat maps have been produced for Newman Sound, in the Terra Nova National Park, and for the Gilbert Bay marine protected area in Labrador.
