Thesis Title

People and Big Cats of the Atlantic Forest, Brazil

Research description

As a Brazilian, I feel that I have a moral obligation to contribute to the conservation of the wild large cats (pumas and jaguars) and their habitat, the Atlantic Forest. The People and Big Cats of the Atlantic Forest project is designed to understand the human dimensions of jaguars and pumas conservation. Dead jaguars and pumas occur not necessarily because of the lack of good biological data on habitat and home ranges, but due to a lack of understanding and addressing of local resident concerns, beliefs and behavior. The continued loss of habitat and illegal killing of the big cats suggest that residents and groups most affected, or able to affect jaguar and puma conservation efforts, have not been engaged in a meaningful way in any conservation initiative so far. Therefore, this project focuses on community engagement through understanding and addressing the key issues facing residents positively or negatively involved in jaguar and puma conservation of the Atlantic Forest.
