Thesis title:
Labour Market Development in Newfoundland and Labrador: Regional Challenges and Active Solutions
Research Description:
My research explores the potential implementation of Active
Labour Market Policies (ALMPs) in Newfoundland and Labrador. ALMPs
are based on the three main components: training, wage subsidies
and improved matching of workers with available jobs. This type of
policy is appropriate to address specific aspects of the local
labour market such as high unemployment rates and labour
shortage.
The provincial labour market is experiencing a structural
unemployment phase, exacerbated by strong out-migration and rapid
population aging. It is unlikely that employment will return to the
equilibrium by itself, which is the assumption for passive labour
market policies. Hence, there is an urgent need to find the
appropriate Active Labour Market Policies to improve the current
unemployment situation in our province and address local labour
demand.
Research interests:
- local, national and international labour markets
- regional development.
