A Musical Farewell

A musical farewell for Dr. Axel Meisen and his partner Barbara Girard, right, and Edward Roberts, left, with his wife Eve Roberts, was held Friday, Dec. 21, at the Petro-Canada Hall. The special concert was held to officially thank Lt.-Gov. Edward Roberts for his service as official visitor to Memorial University during his term as lieutenant governor of Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout his various other affiliations with the university over the past decade and to bid farewell to Dr. Axel Meisen and Barbara Girard as they leave Memorial for other opportunities in Alberta. Performers included Michelle Cheramy, Nathan Cook, Mary O’Keeffe, Jane Leibel, Paul Bendzsa, Tom Gordon, Kristina Szutor, Nancy Dahn and Timothy Steeves.

Meanwhile, almost 300 people crowded into the Main Dining Hall on Memorial’s St. John’s campus on Dec. 18 to officially bid farewell and salute Dr. Meisen. Faculty, staff, students, government officials, business leaders and community groups were on-hand for the reception and to personally thank Dr. Meisen, Memorial’s seventh president and vice-chancellor. Tom Hedderson, the provincial minister of intergovernmental affairs and former minister of Education, praised Dr. Meisen for those accomplishments and noted the president’s commitment to providing an excellent university education to Memorial students.
