Dr. Valerie Greene, a faculty member in the Faculty of Arts, died suddenly at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, aged 54 years, she was the beloved daughter of Austin and Angela Greene of Coley’s Point, Newfoundland; sister of Moya Greene of Toronto, Ontario and Kate Greene McNairn and sister-in-law of Dr. Alan McNairn of Charlottetown, PEI. She was supported whole heartedly throughout most of her life by her former husband, Timothy Summers. Dr. Summers was educated at Memorial University of Newfoundland where she attained a BA in political science; York University in Toronto where she achieved a master of arts in political science; and Carleton University of Ottawa where she achieved her PhD designation at the age of 23. She is the author of many academic articles and a book on resource and economic policy in Newfoundland. In the first part of her career, she was a well-respected professor in the Department of Political Science at Memorial. In later years, her interests gravitated toward creative pursuits, including interior design and visual arts. She will be remembered by her immediate and extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends as a brilliant person, a kind, considerate and gentle woman who struggled all of her adult life with many physical and mental disabilities.
