Dr. Vit Bubenik, Linguistics was invited to deliver a keynote address at the eighth International Conference on Greek Linguistics at the University of Ioannina (Greece) on Sept. 2, 2007. He spoke on the evolution of the Greek prepositional system from Proto-Indo-European local adverbs and adpositions.
Dr. Geoff Rayner-Canham of the Chemistry Department, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, and his co-researcher, Marelene Rayner-Canham, presented a paper titled The Pioneer British Women Chemists: A Forgotten Generation at the annual British Society for the History of Science Conference, held at the University of Manchester, England, June 28-July 1, 2007. They described how the 1880-1925 period was a “golden age” for British women chemists and, in particular, the key role that women chemists played in the First World War.
Dr. Dale Kirby, Faculty of Education, presented a paper titled Reviewing Canadian Post-Secondary Education: An Analysis of Recent Canadian Post-Secondary Education Policy Reviews at the Fourth International Workshop on Higher Education Reforms which took place in Dublin, Ireland, Sept. 1-2, 2007. The annual workshop “brings together researchers and policy makers interested or involved with different dimensions of change and reform in higher education.” The theme of this meeting was Changing Students - Changing Universities: Developments and Policies and it included participants from some 14 countries (see http://www.dcu.ie/ovpli/HE_reform_conference/programme.shtml).
Dr. Fereidoon Shahidi, University Research Professor, Department of Biochemistry, gave a keynote presentation in a symposium titled Bringing Nutrition to Life through Food Science at the 10th Asian Congress of Nutrition in Taipei, Taiwan. The paper was on Phytochemicals of Foods, Beverages and Fruit Vinegars. The congress was attended by participants from five continents and was held in Taipei International Convention Center, Sept. 9-13, 2007. Dr. Shahidi also gave a news conference on latest research findings from his lab on nutraceuticals and functional foods with special emphasis on fruit vinegars.
