Touring the Big Land

Memorial’s president, Dr. Axel Meisen, was in Nain, Labrador from Aug. 6-8 for a series of meetings with community leaders, including senior officials of the Nunatsiavut government. Discussions centred around initiatives and activities that Memorial is undertaking; these include the creation of a task force on aboriginal initiatives, the Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Studies, Inuktitut language retention and development, and university governance. This latest trip to Labrador is one in a series of successful visits Dr. Meisen has made around the province. Most recently he visited the Baie Verte Peninsula and Happy Valley/Goose Bay, where discussions focused on mining activities. Here, Dr. Meisen (right), poses with Tim McNeill, deputy minister of education in the Nunatsiavut government, and Dr. Michael Collins, Memorial’s associate vice-president (academic).
