The Division of Marketing and Communications has added three new members. Communications co-ordinators have been hired for Alumni Affairs and Development, Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Human Resources.

Dawn Roche is Alumni Affairs and Development new communications co-ordinator. She recently returned to the province after a three-year stint in Qatar, where she worked with a communications and events management company as editor of a monthly magazine and communications manager. Upon arrival in Qatar, Ms. Roche was hired by the country’s department of tourism to develop print and electronic promotional materials for distribution primarily throughout the Middle East and Europe.

Prior to journeying to the “land of the sand” as she fondly refers to Qatar, she worked as publisher and general manager with Creative Book Publishing. She also spent four years as manager of film support services with the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation.

Her writing has appeared in guidebooks, magazines, websites and newspapers in Canada, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

If any alumnus has an interesting story to share, contact Ms. Roche at 737-2620 or droche@mun.ca.

Engineering
The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science has appointed Kelly Foss as its new communications co-ordinator, replacing Michelle Osmond during her maternity leave.

Ms. Foss holds a bachelor of journalism (honours) from the University of King’s College in Halifax and a diploma of applied arts (journalism) from Westviking College in Stephenville, now the College of the North Atlantic.

She comes to Memorial from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, where she was a communications and policy research analyst with the Women’s Policy Office and a communications consultant with the Department of Health and Community Services. Prior to that, Ms. Foss was an associate editor and reporter at a number of newspapers in the former Robinson Blackmore chain, including The Advertiser, The Humber Log and the Labradorian.

Ms. Foss said looks forward to working with her counterparts in highlighting the outstanding achievements of the members of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. She welcomes all inquiries or story ideas and can be reached by phone at 737-8287, by e-mail at kfoss@engr.mun.ca.

Human Resources
Shannon O’Dea Dawson has joined the Marketing and Communications team as the communications co-ordinator for Human Resources. She will provide communications and promotional expertise to the many progressive and innovative human resource initiatives throughout Memorial University, specifically as they relate to employees and retirees.

Ms. Dawson is a graduate of Memorial University with a BA, B.Ed., and B.Comm. (Co-Op). Since, she has held positions with local private market research and advertising firms, St. John’s Transportation Commission, the Fairmont Newfoundland, and provided training sessions to local Petro-Canada, Husky, and Exxon-Mobil employees. She said she is pleased her professional career has led her back to Memorial in such an essential capacity toward the advancement of communications to all employees, the foundation of Memorial’s success.

In researching, developing and preparing communications for the Communicator, the Gazette, www.mun.ca, and other publications, she encourages contributions from the university community. Contact Ms. Dawson at 737-4615 or sodawson@mun.ca.
