Eastern Edge Robotics’ team member Jonathan Howse prepares to launch their ROV, Bartlett, into the Marine Institute’s Flume Tank. From June 22-24, students from the province and the world demonstrated their technical savvy as they competed in the MATE Centre’s Annual International ROV Competition. The Marine Institute and the National Research Council’s Institute for Ocean Technology hosted the event which attracted over 300 students from Canada, the U.S., Hong Kong, Scotland, Spain and Iran. The Eastern Edge Robotics team from the Marine Institute, Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic placed second overall in the explorer category and also won for Best Poster. Team member, Justin Higdon, was named Engineering MVP. “We were honoured that the MATE Centre chose to hold this competition at the Marine Institute and the Institute for Ocean Technology,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director with the Marine Institute. “The facilities were have to offer are truly world class and we were extremely proud to showcase them to a global audience.” (Photo by HSIMS)
