Dr. Fang Wang
Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science
Dr. Fang Wang holds B. Eng. and M. Eng. degrees from the Hebei University of Technology (China) and a PhD from Concordia University. Originally from China, she came to Canada in 2000. In 2006, she joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University as a professor in computer and electrical engineering. Her research area is formal hardware verification, IC design and SOC design/verification.
“Microelectronic systems can be very complex with today’s technology,” said Dr. Wang. “For example, we can put more than one billion transistors in a single chip, and they are connected together to make multiple functions. The more complex the system is, the more likelihood there will be bugs. The challenge then is how to detect those bugs. With formal verification techniques, we can easily find those bugs or conclude their absence with 100 per cent guarantee. ”
New to the province, Dr. Wang’s first visit was for her interview for the position at Memorial. However she was quite pleased at the strong academic atmosphere here. She finds that faculty and students have a strong fellowship and there are also close friendships among faculty members.
“It’s wonderful here, the people are so friendly and the professors have a great rapport with their students,” said Dr. Wang. “We have a really good program here. We can teach for two semesters and are available for one semester to do research. This is very important as my specialty advances so rapidly we must be able to keep on top of new developments. It’s very good for our career.”
