Dr. Sudhir B. Abhyankar, associate professor of Chemistry, Environmental Science, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, presented two papers at the 90th Canadian Society of Chemistry conference in Winnipeg in May 2007. The first was titled Integrating Green Chemistry in Undergraduate Chemical Education and the second was A Quarter Century of the National High School Examination, NHSCE: Past, Present and the Future.

Dr. Kam Hon Chu, Economics, published a paper titled Financial Crises, Liberalization, and Government Size in the Cato Journal, Vol. 27. No. 1 (Winter 2007), pp. 37-52; and had an earlier paper – Solution to the Siegel Paradox – published in Open Economies Review, Vol. 16 (2005) pp. 399-405.

Dr. James P. Feehan, Economics, has published a paper titled Labour and Capital Taxation with Public Inputs as Common Property in the journal Public Finance Review. The research for the paper was supported by the Economic and Social Research Institute of Japan’s Cabinet Office. It was co-authored with Professor Raymond Batina of Washington State University.

The work of Marlene MacCallum, visual arts program, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, was featured in an exhibition titled The Big Picture, at the Christina Parker Gallery in St. John’s, from May 18-June 9.

Dr. Amin Muhammad, Discipline of Psychiatry, is the author of the article Bullying in Psychiatry Must Stop, published in the May 2007 issue of Clinical Psychiatry News.

Keith Nicol, associate professor of Geography-Environmental Studies, at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College presented a paper at the Canadian Avalanche Association meetings in Penticton, B.C., May 7-11, 2007, titled A Report on the 2007 Newfoundland Snowmobile Avalanche Fatality and DVD project. The DVD was titled Avalanche Awareness in Western Newfoundland and was funded by a grant from the Canadian Avalanche Foundation.

Dr. George Rose of the Fisheries Conservation Group at the Marine Institute was an invited speaker at two recent conferences held in the U.K. on the cod stocks of the North East Atlantic. At Edinburgh, Scotland, Dr. Rose presented a keynote address on the NW Atlantic cod stocks at a conference aimed at Recovery of the North Sea Cod Stocks, and gave the summing up presentation to the conference. A summary of Dr. Rose’s summary appeared in the fishing magazine Fishing News. At Belfast, Northern Ireland, Dr. Rose chaired the session on Cod Population Structure, The Evidence Base and the Processes Involved and gave two presentations on stock structure, conservation and connection of the various North West Atlantic cod stocks at a Symposium on Spatial Structure of Cod Populations: What are the Implications for the Assessment and Management of Cod Stocks? Both written and electronic summaries of these conferences are being prepared for U.K. and EU government and fisheries agencies.

Dr. Chris Youé, History, gave a lecture to the School of Arts and Social Sciences Research Seminar, James Cook University, Townsville, Australia, on March 22, 2007, on the fourth anniversary of the U.S/British war on Iraq, titled Theorising Empire: The Case of Iraq.
