Bringing a slice of this province to Calgary
by Dawn Roche

The two Ricks – Gen. Rick Hillier and Rick Mercer.

Two prominent Ricks from this province will host the Newfoundland and Labrador Affinity Dinner at the Calgary Petroleum Club on Wednesday, June 6. Canada’s top soldier, Gen. Rick Hillier, will be the guest speaker while emcee Rick Mercer will entertain and regale.

Organized by Memorial University alumni living in Calgary, this gala evening will start with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by a dinner at 7 p.m. A mini-auction will also take place during the event. In attendance will be members of the Calgary Affinity NL honorary board – presidents and vice-presidents of national and international corporations with links to this province.

Since 2005, Gen. Hillier has served as Chief of the Defence Staff with the Department of National Defence. Emcee Rick Mercer hosts The Rick Mercer Report on CBC Television. In 2006, Mr. Mercer went to Afghanistan with Gen. Hillier to be with Canadian troops at Christmas time.

Tickets are available for $125 each. Proceeds will be used to support Memorial scholarships and bursaries. Tickets are available by contacting Memorial’s Office of Alumni Affairs and Development at 709-737-4354 or e-mailing carol@mun.ca. Additional event information can also be obtained by visiting www.munalum.ca.
