Presidential search committee to be appointed

Memorial University’s Board of Regents is starting along the detailed path that will eventually lead to a new president for the university. Gil Dalton, chair of the Board of Regents, will lead the search committee that will find a successor to Dr. Axel Meisen, who will complete his term as president of Memorial in August 2008, after serving in the role since 1999.

“As in previous searches, the committee will reflect the many groups, internal and external, who have a stake in the development of Memorial University,” Mr. Dalton said. “We plan to announce the names of the people chosen to serve on the committee after our May board meeting. Memorial is central to the economic, social and cultural development of Newfoundland and Labrador and this search committee has the important task of finding a new president to lead our university.”

Specifically, the board resolved to “seek nominations of, or applications from, suitable candidates for the position of president of Memorial University of Newfoundland by whatever means the committee considers appropriate.” The board resolution also charged the search committee with conducting interviews and recommending an appropriate candidate to the Board of Regents.

Memorial’s president is appointed by the Board of Regents, in consultation with the university’s Senate and with the approval of the lieutenant-governor in council.

The search committee will consist of: the chair of the board, who will also chair the committee; four other board members, to be chosen by the chair; five members of the faculty, chosen by the Senate, with at least one member from each of the St. John’s Campus, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College and the Marine Institute; three students, chosen by the chair after consultation with the president of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union, the Marine Institute Students’ Union, Grenfell College Students’ Union, and the Graduate Students’ Union; an academic administrator, chosen by them from among themselves; a non-academic administrator, chosen by them from among themselves; and two members of the public-at-large, chosen by the chair.

The secretary of the Board of Regents, Eleanor Bennett, will act as the secretary of the search committee. Questions or further information regarding the search committee and the search process should be directed to Ms. Bennett at 737-8281 or eleanorb@mun.ca.

The board also resolved that it would have the names of those serving on the search committee at the next meeting of the board to be held on May 22, 2007, in St. John’s.
