Focus on the Sea-Hawks

All eyes will be on Memorial University’s Field House in two weeks as the Sea-Hawks host the national women’s basketball championships.
The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women’s basketball championships take place March 9-11. Eight teams representing all parts of the country will compete over three days in hopes of capturing title CIS champion.
Athletic Director Michelle Healey said the excitement is building for the first national university basketball final hosted in this province.
“People around the basketball community are really excited and we’re starting to feel the university community now getting excited and we’re starting to feel the general community starting to say ‘wow, a national championship is coming to our city, we’d better get out and support our hometown team.’”
The tournament will focus attention on Memorial University from across the country, said Ms. Healey, with the cable sports channel The Score broadcasting the final to the nation on March 11.
“It’s a great opportunity for people across the country to see our university, our town and our campus and see exactly what Memorial has to offer.”
The tournament features eight teams from across the country three from the west, two from Ontario, one from Quebec and another team from the Atlantic region will join the host Sea-Hawks.
During the championships, Memorial Athletics is inviting alumni to take a walk down memory lane. On Saturday, March 10, all Sea-Hawks basketball alumni are invited to the Field House for a reception, taking place between the two semi-final games being played that evening.
As well, Memorial Athletics is offering alumni the opportunity to take in the action together in the reserved Basketball Alumni seating (section JJ) of the Field House.
Tournament passes are available at the Field House Customer Service desk or by calling 737-3000. Tournament passes get you in to all games, including the championship on Sunday.
