Date of the oldest item in the CNS. It’s a map by famed
Italian cartographer Ramusio portraying Newfoundland as a series of islands.
Ramusio created fictional inlets and rivers through the centre of Newfoundland
and added illustrations of elegant men in knee breeches and women in flowing
gowns hunting and lounging in the landscape. Many copies of the Ramusio
map were printed and it was actually used as a chart for navigating the
area. |
