Faculty member receives Alumni Association’s highest honour

By Wade Kearley

Memorial’s own Dr. James Barnes, BA (Hons.) ’66, B.Comm.(Hons.)’66, is this year’s recipient of the Alumni Association’s highest honour, the Lifetime Achievement Award. The 2005 awards recipients were announced by Ann Marie Hann, chairperson of the Alumni Tribute Awards.

Among the other three recipients are renowned musician Dr. Thomas Yee, who will accept the Horizon Award for achievement under age 35 years; educator and volunteer Calvin Butt, who will receive the J. D. Eaton Award for outstanding volunteer service to Memorial University; and community leader and educator Donald Crewe of Channel-Port aux Basques, who will receive the Outstanding Community Service Award.

The four will be recognized for their achievements at the 24th Annual Alumni Tribute Awards on Thursday, Oct. 20. This premier event, which is sponsored by the Alumni Association and Memorial University, is an exciting part of Celebrate Memorial, held every October. The awards gala includes a welcoming reception, a four-course dinner, musical entertainment, and a multi-media awards presentation.

Ms Hann noted that it is a great opportunity to catch up with acquaintances, meet a wide variety of graduates and friends of Memorial and get a glimpse into the lives of four very special people. “Their commitment to excellence is a source of pride for everyone who has an affinity for Memorial University,” she said.

Ms Hann explained that this is the 24th year that the Alumni Association of Memorial University has recognized excellence among its peers. For the first 20 years, the association awarded only an alumna/us of the year award. But with more than 55,000 graduates from Memorial, the Alumni Association felt there were many more alumni who deserved recognition, and in 2002, it expanded the Alumni Tribute Awards to include the four categories. Each year candidates are nominated for one of four categories by fellow alumni. The Alumni Association Executive evaluates those nominations and selects the recipients.

“I encourage everyone who wants to take part in this special event to order tickets now. At $60 per person the tickets are a great value, and are only available in advance,” said Ms Hann. To purchase tickets call 737-4354 or e-mail
