Neis appointed to the SSHRC

David L. Emerson, minister of Industry and minister responsible for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), announced Sept. 15 the appointment of Dr. Barbara Neis to the council.

“I am pleased to welcome Dr. Neis as a member of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council,” said Mr. Emerson. “Striving to facilitate the transfer of information developed in our universities into practical applications that benefit all Canadians is a key pursuit of SSHRC. I am confident Dr. Neis will provide sound insight as to how the council can achieve this goal.”

Dr. Neis is currently the co-director of SafetyNet, a Community Research Alliance on Health and Safety in Marine and Coastal Work, and a full-time professor within the Department of Sociology at Memorial University. In addition, she is an author, a recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Research (1998), and a member of various advisory boards and committees. Dr. Neis holds an MA from Memorial University and PhD from the University of Toronto.

SSHRC is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions. SSHRC also partners with public and private sector organizations to focus research and aid the development of better policies and practices in key areas of Canada’s social, cultural and economic life.
