Grenfell College getting set for Orientation 2005

Summer’s end brings a new energy to Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.

This month, the west coast campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland will host orientation for first-year students, whether they are recent high school graduates, mature students, or have transferred from another school.

“Each September, orientation grows bigger and better,” Krysta Simms, orientation co-ordinator with the Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Department of Student Affairs and Services, said of the event that has grown into a week of student-oriented activities.

Orientation 2005 themed, With You From the Start is taking place the week of Sept. 4-10 and includes an information session on the different services available at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, campus tours, free swims, live bands, a Hawaiian theme dance, games, a barbeque, a video game tournament, a midnight movie, and a grocery store tour.

“We are also hosting several special events, like our Parents’ Orientation and our Non-Traditional Student Orientation,” said Ms. Simms.

Parents’ Orientation sessions will be held Sunday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 5, at 10:30 a.m.

“These sessions are designed to help parents/guardians of first-year students become better acquainted with the school, learn about the various services offered at the college and provide information regarding the emotions and experiences they may have as their child adjusts to university life,” added Ms. Simms. Parents are asked to pre-register, if possible, for one of these two sessions.

“Sir Wilfred Grenfell College is also selling orientation kits that contain lots of great stuff to help get a student’s university experience off to a fantastic start. In these kits we have included an Orientation 2005 T-shirt, a water bottle, a clipboard, discount coupons for businesses in Corner Brook, and loads more, all stuffed into a tote bag.” These kits are available for purchase by phoning 637-6232, e-mailing saorientation@swgc.ca or on the orientation website at www.swgc.ca/orientation.

Students or parents interested in learning more about Orientation 2005 can contact Ms. Simms at 637-6232 or saorientation@swgc.ca, or Andy Bowers, orientation co-ordinator with the Grenfell College Student Union, at 637-6230 or abowers@swgc.ca.
