Going deeper

A new research tool arrived on Memorial’s St. John’s campus recently a tool that will allow Memorial’s ocean researchers to go where they’ve never gone before. The MUN Explorer, a four-tonne autonomous underwater vehicle, can reach depths of up to 3,000 metres and is the only AUV of its size and capability available to the university research community in Canada. It travelled by transport truck from British Columbia to the S.J. Carew Building to join Dr. Neil Bose’s team in the Underwater Vehicles Laboratory. Dr. Bose is Memorial’s Canada Research Chair in Offshore Underwater Vehicles Design. The $1 million Explorer was funded by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency through an Atlantic Innovation Fund award to the Pan-Atlantic Petroleum Systems Consortium. The Explorer is headed to Holyrood soon for testing on vehicle dynamics and environmental monitoring before taking on bigger projects.
