Dr. Lessey R. Sooklal
Dr. Lessey Sooklal, a faculty member in the Faculty of Business Administration, passed away peacefully from cancer, April 29, 2006, aged 65. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Leila (Ramnarase), sons Rohan and Anil, daughter Shara, and many close relatives and friends.
Dr. Donald Barton
Dr. Donald Barton, retired from the Department of Chemistry, died May 4, 2006, in Lindsay, Ont., after a long and courageous battle with cancer. During his 32 years at Memorial, Dr. Barton made many important contributions to the development of the undergraduate physical chemistry program. In recognition of his efforts, the Department of Chemistry annually awards the Donald and Evelyn Barton Prize in Physical Chemistry to an outstanding undergraduate student.
John Kenneth Galbraith
John Kenneth Galbraith, the internationally-renowned economist who was awarded an honorary doctorate of letters at Memorial’s 1999 fall convocation, died April 29, 2006, at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., of natural causes, aged 97. He is known for his development of Keynesian and post-Keynesian economics, the economics of the modern large firm, as well as for his writing and his active involvement in American politics. In his honour, the John Kenneth Galbraith Lectureship in Public Policy brings to Memorial University outstanding figures whose work reflects their commitment to excellence in scholarship and public affairs.
