2004-05 Inventory of Sponsored Projects

The Office of Research is currently conducting the annual verification process for Memorialís Inventory of Sponsored Projects. All principal researchers who have projects with awarded funding in 2004-05 will soon receive documentation of their research. If you do not receive information for verification by May 16, 2005, and you had externally funded research administered through Memorial in 2004-05, contact Joy Carew, 737-8252 or joybest@mun.ca. Please note, this applies to research funding from external sources only.

Research ethics genetics workshop

The Human Investigation Committee (HIC) together with the National Council on Ethics in Human Research (NCEHR) is holding a workshop on June 10, 2005, titled Clearing the Fog: Addressing Ethical and Legal Ambiguities at the Interface of Genetics Research and Clinical Practice. The workshop is limited to 60 participants and the registration fee is $100. Additional information on the workshop and a registration form is available at www.med.mun.ca/geneticswksp/.

Funding opportunities on CIHRís Web site

CIHR has implemented a number of changes to the Funding Opportunities section of its Web site. These changes include: merging open competitions information with strategic funding opportunities so that it is no longer necessary to search out this information on two different areas of the Web site; providing a master list of all CIHR funding opportunities; implementing a program classification system of grant programs, salary programs, training programs, and research related activities; providing more direct access to the funding pages for the institutes and portfolios; distinguishing between types of funding opportunities ≠ regular, occasional, partnered, new or modified; and providing an area to promote funding related news and developments. Nominations deadline extended

The deadline for nominations for the 2005 Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering has been extended until May 6. Information on the nominations process is available at www.nserc.gc.ca/award_e.asp?nav=herzberg&lbi=nomination.

NSERC challenge awards

The 2005 Synergy and Innovation Challenge Awards Gala will be held in the Atlantic Region this year on Oct. 19 at the Halifax World Trade and Convention Centre. The Synergy Awards for Innovation are awarded to honour outstanding achievements of university-industry collaboration. Information on how to nominate partnerships involving Canadian university professors and companies is available at www.nserc.gc.ca/synergy. The nominations deadline is May 31. Innovation Challenge Awards are awarded for research in the natural sciences, engineering or computer science at the masterís or PhD level which has potential to be transformed into a commercial product or service. Knowledge Translation Award

CIHR invites nominations of teams or organizations working in Canada in the health field in two categories for its Knowledge Translation Award. The first category covers those with an impact at the national or international level in which case the award recipient will receive a certificate of recognition and a grant of $100,000. The second category covers those with an impact at the local or regional level in which case the award recipient will receive a certificate of recognition and a grant of $20,000. CIHR extends deadline

The CIHR Institutes of Aboriginal Peopleís Health and Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction, have extended the registration deadline to June 1 (previously, April 1) for the RFA entitled Suicide Prevention Targeting Aboriginal People ≠ New Emerging Team. CIHR Partnership Award

The CIHR Partnership Award established in 2002 is offered to recognize partnerships that exemplify excellence by bringing health research communities together to create innovative approaches to research, develop research agendas that are responsive to the health needs of Canadians; and/or accelerate the translation of knowledge for the benefit of Canadians. The application form and eligibility criteria can be found at www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/27367.html. The application deadline is June 6.

Prix Galien Canada (Research)

The Prix Galien Canada (Research) is open to any researcher or team involved for at least the last five years in bio-pharmaceutical research leading, or making a substantial contribution, to the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of diseases. Candidates from academia, health care institutions, research centres and industry are eligible. The nominations form is available from the Office of Research or from Christiane Bordeleau of Prix Galien Canada at (514) 843-2535. The deadline for submission is June 17.
