Keith Nicol, an associate professor at Grenfell
College, ran a recreational avalanche course for Gros Morne
National Park wardens on Feb 21-22. Mr. Nicol runs Winter
Outdoor Pursuits, part of the Environmental Studies program
at Grenfell. He regularly runs avalanche training courses
with his students and for others interested in winter safety.
“Many people don’t realize that avalanches have
killed over 30 people in Newfoundland and I often hear of
close calls that either skiers, snowshoers or snowmobilers
have had in recent years. The number of close calls has been
amazing.” Mr. Nichol said that, at the very least, backcountry
travelers should carry an avalanche transceiver, probe and
shovel. |
