Wayne Thistle may have moved on, but his contributions to
the university are not forgotten. As winner of the alumni
association's J.D. Eaton Award for volunteer service to
Memorial, he will be one of five outstanding alumni to be
recognized next month.
Gary Peddle, president of the Alumni Association of Memorial
University of Newfoundland, and Dr. Linda Inkpen, chair
of the Alumni Tribute Awards, announced the 2003 award recipients
last week. They will be formally recognized at a gala dinner
to be held at R. Gushue Hall, St. John’s Campus, on
Thursday, Oct.16. Anyone wishing to attend is urged to book
their tickets early.
Recipients of the 2003 Alumni Tribute Awards include: Lifetime
Achievement Award: Former Chief Justice T. Alec Hickman,
OC, QC, LLD and Memorial University College ’44; Horizon
Award: Stephen Kent, BBA’01; Outstanding Professional
Achievement: Lt.-Gen. Rick Hillier, B.Sc.’76; Outstanding
Community Service Award: Maj. Dr. G. Dawn Howse, B.Med.Sci.’76,
MD'78; J. D. Eaton Award: Wayne Thistle, QC, B.Ed.’68,
B.Sc.(Hons)’68, MA'71.
“The selection process was challenging,” said
Mr. Peddle. “We had 39 exceptional nominees for these
five awards and all the nominees deserve to be applauded
for their contributions to society. I hope that these awards
will serve as a source of encouragement for the recipients
and as a significant sign that their work is not passing
unnoticed either by their university or by their fellow
alumni.”
Dr. Inkpen added, “This is my second year as chair
of the Alumni Tribute Awards and I feel privileged to be
part of a process that recognizes the contributions of such
remarkable people. This province, our country and indeed
the world are enriched by the life and work of the thoughtful
and dedicated people who have graduated from Memorial University.
The Alumni Tribute Awards give us an opportunity to focus
on a few of these individuals and to share their stories
of service, achievement and dedication with the world.”
The Alumni Tribute Awards gala, an evening of fine dining
and music honouring these remarkable alumni, is a showcase
for the Celebrate Memorial festivities. Tickets cost $50.
Tables of eight are available and there are a range of sponsorship
opportunities. Proceeds support the Memorial University
Scholarship fund.
