Dr. Ford Bursey was named assistant dean
for Continuing Medical Education in the Faculty of Medicine,
for a three-year period, effective Jan. 1, 2004. The appointment
was made by the Board of Regents.
Dr. Alice Collins, Memorial’s dean
of education, has been named honorary chairperson for the
Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association’s
Education Week 2004.
Mary Dalton, English, has been named one
of three finalists for the Winterset Award for Excellence
in Newfoundland Writing for her book of poetry Merrybegot.
The Winterset Award was established in memory of the late
Sandra Fraser-Gwyn, a long-time advocate of Newfoundland culture.
Dr. Michael deRoche had his term as acting
head in the Department of Classics extended for four months,
effective Jan. 1, 2004, to allow for completion of a search.
The appointment was made by the Board of Regents.
Dr. Roberta Hammett had her term as associate dean
of graduate programs in the Faculty of Education renewed for
a three-year period, effective Feb. 16, 2004. The appointment
was made by the Board of Regents.
Dr. Gary Jeffrey had his appointment as acting
associate dean of undergraduate programs in the Faculty of
Education to be extended for the period from Jan. 1 to June
30, 2004, to allow for completion of a search. The appointment
was made by the Board of Regents.
Dr. Desmond Robb was appointed chair of the
Discipline of Laboratory Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine,
for the period from Dec. 15, 2003, to Aug. 31, 2007. The appointment
was made by the Board of Regents.
Dr. Graham Shorrocks, English, has been elected vice-president
of the Société Internationale de Dialectologie
et Géolinguistique (SIDG)/International Society for
Dialectology and Geolinguistics (ISDG).
David Vardy, interim director of the Public
Policy Research Office, had a scholarship established in his
name by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of
Canada. The Vardy Scholarship in Arts and Science is valued
at $3,500.
