Dr. Sukhinder Kaur (Cheema)
, Department of Biochemistry, presented two papers at the International Cardiovascular Conferences held in India, in January 2004. Dr. Kaur presented an invited paper titled Heart Disease: Why the Blame is Placed on Dietary Fats? at the International Conference on Cardiovascular Research, held in Lucknow, India, Jan. 8-11. Dr. Kaur was awarded the Young Investigator Award by the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences at the inauguration ceremony of this conference. Dr. Kaur presented another paper titled Is Fish Oil Therapy Beneficial in Heart Disease? at the International Symposium on Recent Advances in Pharmacology (theme of the symposium was Pharmacotherapy of the Heart) held in Delhi, India, Jan. 6-8. This paper was co-authored by Dr. Phil Davis, Department of Biochemistry, and graduate students Pujitha DeSilva and Marion Cornish.

Dr. Christopher Kovacs, Faculty of Medicine, is a co-author with Peter Wookey and colleagues from University of Melbourne: Brasier G, Tikellis C, Xuereb L, Craigie J, Casley D, Fudge NJ, Kalnins R, Cooper ME, Novel hexad repeats conserved in a putative transporter with restricted expression in cell types associated with growth, calcium exchange and homeostasis. Experimental Cell Research 2004; 293:31-42. He is also author of the chapter Fetal Mineral Homeostasis and Skeletal Mineralization in The Skeleton: Biochemical, Genetic and Molecular Interactions in Development and Homeostasis. Massaro EJ, Rogers J (eds): Totowa, NJ: Humana Press, 2004: 293-306. With Pierre Chue, a psychiatrist at the University of Alberta, Dr. Kovacs wrote the review article Safety and tolerability of atypical antipsychotics in patients with bipolar disorder: Prevalence, monitoring and management. Bipolar Disorders 2003; 5 (Suppl 2): 62-79.

B. J. Laurel and J. A. Brown, Ocean Sciences Centre, and R. S. Gregory, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, published an article titled Settlement and Distribution of Age-0 juvenile cod, Gadus morhua and G. ogac, Following a Large-scale Habitat Manipulation, in the Nov. 7 issue of the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series (Vol. 262: 241–252, 2003).

Dr. Paul Snelgrove, Canada Research Chair in Boreal and Cold Ocean Systems, Ocean Sciences Centre, along with former M.Sc. student Patricia A. Ramey, published an article, titled Spatial Patterns in Sedimentary Macrofaunal Communities on the South Coast of Newfoundland in Relation to Surface Oceanography and Sediment Characteristics, in the Nov. 7 issue of the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series (Vol. 262: 215–227, 2003).

Ru Cheng Tian, Don Deibel, Raymond J. Thompson and Richard B. Rivkin, Ocean Sciences Centre, published an article, titled Modeling of Climate Forcing on a Cold-Ocean Ecosystem, Conception Bay, Newfoundland, in the Nov. 7 issue of the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series (Vol. 262: 1–17, 2003).
