Nelson Eldridge Squires
Nelson Squires, a photographer and filmmaker who was the first television news cameraman in Newfoundland and an important part of the innovative film work produced by the Memorial University Extension Media Unit, died Dec. 29 in St. John's. He was 75. MUN Extension opened in 1959, and was soon an integral part of the developing professional, indigenous Newfoundland film production scene. Mr. Squires came aboard, first as both a sound technician and chief cameraman. An early production, Decks Awash, broadcast on CJON-TV, was a fisheries-based series and one of the longest running in Newfoundland. Mr. Squires leaves his wife, Bernice (Sheppard), daughter Debbie Andrews, and sons Stephen and Glen.
