Dr. Terry-Lynn Young, Genetics,
has received funding of $80,000 from the Canadian Breast
Cancer Research Foundation for ongoing research on breast
cancer. During her fellowship at the University of Washington,
under the supervision of world-renowned breast cancer geneticist
Dr. Mary-Claire King, discoverer of the BRCA1 gene (BReast
CAncer susceptibility gene 1), Dr. Young identified 11 mutations
in genes in Newfoundland families with breast and/or ovarian
cancer.
Dr. Bernard Fournier, Political Science,
and Dr. Jean Snook, German, were among
the nine participants chosen from many applicants across
Canada to attend a seminar on Germany at the Crossroads:
The Difficulties of Change at The Canadian Centre for German
and European Studies at York University, Feb.13-14.
