Five years ago, Peter Armitage underwent surgery and radiation treatment for cancer. Last week, Mr. Armitage skied across the Avalon Peninsula to celebrate reaching the five-year survival mark and promote the Patient and Family Support Fund of the Newfoundland Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation (NCTRF). Dr. James Youden, a researcher with C-CORE and Dr. Siu O’Young, a professor with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, joined him on the trip. Armitage, Youden and O’Young skied from Holyrood Pond near Gaskiers, St. Mary’s Bay to Tors Cove.

The 70-kilometre journey took three days. On the first trip in 2001, the trio erected a small cairn at the south end of Mount Carmel Pond containing personal messages related to the battle against cancer. They re-visited the site on this year’s trip for a special ceremony. Fellow skiers and supporters in the fight against cancer joined the trio on Feb. 15 and skied the 15 kilometres from Tors Cove to the cache site.

As a follow up to the ski trip, there is a Bash Cancer Bash dance with the Panting Brothers at the Masonic Temple in St. John's Feb. 28, at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale at Auntie Crae’s Food Shop on Water Street, The Outfitters on Water Street, Bennington Gate Bookstore in Churchill Square, and Food For Thought on Duckworth Street with all proceeds going to the Patient and Family Support Fund.
