Research Directory
The number of entries in the online Research Directory maintained
by the Office of Research continues to grow. The directory
is used both within the university as well as extensively
by outside users. Researchers who are not currently listed
are encouraged to prepare the brief, one-page form and send
it by mail to Elizabeth Noseworthy, Office of Research,
or electronically to elizaben@mun.ca.
Those who are currently listed in the directory are reminded
that any needed revisions or updates can be easily and expeditiously
made. To browse the directory or to obtain a copy of the

Electronic journal publication
The International Consortium for the Advancement of Academic
Publication (ICAAP), based at Athabasca University, is involved
in the implementation and/or hosting of electronic journals
online and offers customized electronic publishing services.
Interested researchers are invited to visit their Web site

AquaNet directed call for proposals
The deadline for submissions of proposals for AquaNet’s
directed call for proposals in aquaculture research for
2004-2006 on the topic titled Nutritive Value of Novel Protein
and Lipid Products Derived from the Processing of Oilseeds
Alone and with Animal Protein Sources for Finfish Aquaculture
is March 8, 2004. For detailed information on this topic,

Atlantic Health Promotion Research Forum
The Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre invites submission
of abstracts for the Atlantic Health Promotion Research
Forum to be held in Moncton, New Brunswick, on June 1-2,
2004. The focus of the forum is on health promotion research
which is multidisciplinary, collaborative and action oriented.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is Feb. 27. Abstracts
are also sought by March 31 for poster presentations, oral
presentations, and roundtables. Further information is available

Research establishment grants
The Banting Research Foundation will support the work of
young Canadian scientists to initiate their medical research
programs with an annual grant of up to $20,000, not to exceed
a ceiling for total support of $60,000 per annum from Banting
combined with any other operating grants received. Applicants
should be new investigators within the first three years
of their first independent university appointment and have
received less than $150,000 in total start-up funds. Banting
will give special emphasis on innovative proposals that
have the potential to contribute to the understanding of
fundamental mechanisms of disease processes and/or contribute
to their cure. Further information including an application

The deadline for submission of grant applications is March
15.
Health care and genetics
CIHR’s Institute of Health Services and Policy Research
is pleased to announce the recent launch of a new request
for applications titled Addressing Health Care and Health
Policy Challenges of New Genetic Opportunities. Total funding
available is currently $5 million over three years to fund
operating grants of up to $250,000 per year for up to three

There is an application registration deadline of April 1
with the complete application due by June 1.
ACU award programs
The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) offers
the following funding programs: Anastasios Christodoulou
International Conference Grants of up to £1,200 which
are intended to support attendance at an academic conference
in a developing country by a researcher who has not previously
studied or attended an academic conference in another country
(application deadline of April 30); British Academy/ACU
Grants for International Collaboration of up to £5,000
to support international joint projects in the humanities
and social sciences involving British scholars (application
deadline of May 1); and ACU Titular Fellowships of £5,000
for travel and study in commonwealth countries other than
the applicant’s own (application deadline of May 31).

Killam Research Fellowships
The Canada Council for the Arts invites applications for
its Killam Research Fellowships. These fellowships support
researchers in the humanities, social sciences, natural
sciences, health sciences, engineering, or studies linking
any of the disciplines within these fields. Valued at up
to $53,000 per annum, the fellowships provide two years
of release time from teaching and administrative duties
to allow for concentrated research activity. They are intended
for established scholars (typically at the full professor
level) who have demonstrated outstanding research ability
and who have published the results of their research through
substantial publications in their field. For further information,
