Blue Lake, a doctoral student in the Faculty of Medicine, has been awarded the J.H. Stewart Reid Memorial Fellowship for 2002-2003, valued at $5,000. The fellowship is named in honour of the first executive secretary of the Canadian Association of University Teachers and is awarded annually to one doctoral student at a Canadian University. Mr. Lake received a B.Sc. in biochemistry/behavioral neuroscience from Memorial and is currently enrolled in the PhD program in cancer research at Memorial under the supervision of Dr. Ken Kao. His research focuses on how the nervous system develops in the frog, Xenopus laevis. By studying the role of specific genes in the developmental process, Mr. Lake expects to learn more about the cause of birth defects and cancer, which may lead the way to new treatments.

Dr. Antonio M. Martin, Biochemistry, has been named Fellow of the International Energy Foundation (IEF). The IEF, among other activities, sponsors the International Energy Conferences and Exhibitions (ENERGEX), held every two years, where he has chaired sessions on waste treatment and presented papers on my research on biological degradation of wastes.
