Regional Partnerships presentation
Dr. Anne Alper, portfolio manager, RPP Planning and Budget, with the Research
Partnerships Program of NSERC will be at Memorial on Sept. 26 and is available
to give a presentation to interested faculty on the Research Partnerships
Program of NSERC. A presentation is tentatively scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
to about 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Genesis Board Room,
Spencer Hall (SP-4006). Dr. Alper would also have some limited time available
to meet on an individual basis. Faculty members interested in attending
either the general session or in scheduling an individual interview with
Dr. Alper are asked to contact Elaine Hendry, Office of Research, by phone
at 8251 or by e-mail at elainew@mun.ca.
Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF)
ACOA has just issued its call for proposals for Round 2 of the Atlantic
Innovation Fund (AIF). For this competition, there is a total budget of
$145 million. The deadline for full applications is Nov. 27, 2002, with
a letter of intent (i.e., maximum of three pages) due Sept. 30, 2002.
There are new guidelines for this competition and these can be found at

NSERC life sciences site visit
Interested faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are invited
to a general information session to be held by representatives of the
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and
the Life Sciences grant selection committees. A representative from GSC-12
(Psychology: Brain, Behaviour and Cognitive Science), GSC-18 (Evolution
and Ecology), GSC-32 (Cell Biology), GSC-33 (Molecular and Developmental
Genetics), as well as an NSERC program officer will attend. The general
session will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 9-9:45 in Rooms ED-5004
and 5005, Education Building, followed by a workshop from 10-11 a.m. on
preparation of an NSERC Discovery Grant application. Interested researchers
from all disciplines are welcome to attend all or part of the sessions.
Prix Galien Canada
The 2003 Prix Galien Canada (Research) is open to any person or team who
have been involved for at least the last five years in bio-pharmaceutical
research leading, or making a substantial contribution, to the diagnosis,
prevention or treatment of diseases. Candidates from academia, health
care institutions, research centres and industry are eligible for consideration.
The prize will be awarded to the researcher or the research team judged
to have made the most significant contribution to pharmaceutical research
in Canada. The deadline for applications is Nov. 1.
Fulbright program
The Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United
States of America are pleased to announce the official opening of the
Fulbright grants. The Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program operates on the principle
of reciprocal exchange and provides the opportunity for Canadian and American
scholars to lecture, research and study in their host country. The award
of $15,000 US is for one nine-month academic year beginning in September.
The deadline date for receipt of applications is Nov. 15. For further

Sustainable forest management
The Sustainable Forest Management Network, a Network of Centres of Excellence,
will be holding a conference on advances in forest management entitled
From Knowledge to Practice. The conference will be held on Nov. 13-15
at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton. Conference details and registration

Canadian Hemophilia Society
The Canadian Hemophilia Society (CHS) and the Association of Hemophilia
Clinic Directors of Canada (AHCDC), in collaboration with Novo Nordisk,
have established a new fellowship in Congenital and Acquired Bleeding
Disorders. This program will provide fellows in hematology or other relevant
fields the opportunity to obtain additional clinical or research skills
necessary to improve the care and lives of patients with hemophilia and
other inherited bleeding disorders. The value of this fellowship is $70,000
for one year and it is tax deductible. Applications must be received on
