Dr. James P. Feehan, Smallwood
Foundation, presented a paper titled Cigarette Smoking and the Cost of
Publicly Provided Health Care: An Econometric Approach, at the annual
congress of the International Institute of Public Finance. The congress
met in Helsinki, Aug. 26-29. The focus of the paper was on health care
costs in this province. The paper was co-authored with Alison Edwards
and Jorge Segovia of Memorial's Faculty of Medicine, and Glenn Harrison
of the University of South Carolina. Rasul A. Khan, honorary research professor of biology, attended the 10th International Congress of the Parasitologists Association held in Vancouver, Aug. 3-9. He gave an invited presentation titled Fish Parasites as Biomarkers and chaired a session on Fish Parasites Affecting Food Production. At a meeting of the World Federation of Parasitologists, he was elected president for the period 2002-2006. Seventy-six societies from 64 countries are affiliated with the federation.
