Dr. Wayne Gulliver (B.Sc.’78; B.Med.Sc.’80, MD ’82) has been appointed to the National Research Council for a three-year term.

"As president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chiropractic Association I can assure [Dr. Stephen] Major and the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association that chiropractors do not feel that we provide the same service as general practitioners."

Brock University professor Dr. Maureen Connolly (BPE’78; MPE’86) has been awarded the prestigious 3M Teaching Fellowship. The award recognizes university educators who are committed not only to teaching, but also to demonstrating a superior level of leadership toward the improvement and growth of university teaching across Canada.

"The reasons why the board chose to deviate from past practice [and not grant a rate decrease] is not clear. However the board did take note of the fact that the Standard and Poors’ credit rating agency has placed Fortis Inc. (the parent company of Newfoundland Power) on a negative credit watch. If the board had followed its previous formula, consumers should be getting a rate decrease."

Lucienne Robillard, president of Treasury Board, recently announced the recipients of this year's Public Service Awards of excellence. Among this year's winners are MUN alumni: Brian Keith Rose (BA ’97; CBAD ’97); William Gregory O'Leary (BA ’91; DBA ’91); Kenneth Lloyd Pike (BA ’89); Robert John Wellon (BA ’90; B.Ed. ’93); and Wilma Anne Philpott (BA ’93)

Ken Dicks (B.Sc Pharm 1990) from Central Pharmacy in Grand Falls was named 2003 Canadian Compounding Pharmacist of the Year by Wiler PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America),

"Aliant has assured government that the restructuring of Xwave will not have any impact on its Newfoundland and Labrador-based operations and that the company remains fully committed to meeting all of its obligations under its industrial benefits agreement with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador … bring new business to the province … create new jobs within the company’s provincial offices … subcontract work out to the local IT industry. The company is currently on track with all its commitments."
