Vice-presidents grants committee
The term of the humanities representative on the Vice-Presidents
Grants Committee is expiring and expressions of interest and nominations
for the replacement are invited by Feb. 7, 2003. The Vice-Presidents
Grants Committee adjudicates applications for internal travel and research
funds under the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
general grant and for the Vice-Presidents Research Grant.
Alcoholic beverage research
The Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation (ABMRF) accepts applications
for grants to conduct biomedical, biobehavioral and psychosocial research
in important aspects of alcohol consumption and its effects. Funding is
provided for grants up to $50,000 per year for up to two years. The foundation
is especially interested in providing funding for newly independent investigators
and investigators who are new to the field of alcohol research. The deadline
for submission of applications is Feb. 15. Further information can be

Funding for literacy projects
The Literacy Branch of the provincial Department of Education, in cooperation
with the National Literacy Secretariat, is offering support for literacy
projects for 2003-04. Unlike the previous year, there will be only one
opportunity to submit proposals for 2003-04 funding. Detailed guidelines
and an application form are available at

of proposals is Feb. 21.
Call for nominations
The Interagency Panel on Research Ethics (PRE) is establishing a social
sciences and humanities research ethics special working committee. This
committee will provide the panel with advice and recommendations on strategic
approaches for addressing priority issues in social sciences and humanities
research ethics for the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct
for Research Involving Humans. The committee will have an initial mandate
with a duration of one year, with the possibility of renewal. Interested
individuals should send a CV and statement of interest by Feb. 5. Further
information on the details to be included in the statement of interest

CIHR registration deadline
The registration deadline for the March 2003 open grants competition program
is Feb. 1 (with a courier date of no later than Monday, Feb. 3). For those
researchers (and only those) who unfortunately were not funded in the
September 2002 competition, the deadline for registration has been extended
to Feb. 10, 2003. Please note that registration is mandatory for all applicants
who wish to submit a full CIHR application. All forms and guidelines for
completing the Registration Module, including the required Operating Grant
Registration/Application Checklist, are available only on CIHRs
Web site at www.cihrirsc.gc.ca/services/funding/apply/instr/forms_guidelines_e.shtml.
