Alcoholic beverage research

The Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation (ABMRF) accepts applications for grants to conduct biomedical, biobehavioral and psychosocial research in important aspects of alcohol consumption and its effects. Funding is provided for grants up to $50,000 per year for up to two years. The foundation is especially interested in providing funding for newly independent investigators and investigators who are new to the field of alcohol research. The deadline for submission of applications is Feb. 15. Further information can be obtained from www.abmrf.org.

Funding for literacy projects
The Literacy Branch of the provincial Department of Education, in cooperation with the National Literacy Secretariat, is offering support for literacy projects for 2003-04. Unlike the previous year, there will be only one opportunity to submit proposals for 2003-04 funding. Detailed guidelines and an application form are available at www.gov.nf.ca/edu/literacy/grants03-04.pdf. The deadline for submission of proposals is Feb. 21.

Call for nominations
The Interagency Panel on Research Ethics (PRE) is establishing a social sciences and humanities research ethics special working committee. This committee will provide the panel with advice and recommendations on strategic approaches for addressing priority issues in social sciences and humanities research ethics for the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans. The committee will have an initial mandate with a duration of one year, with the possibility of renewal. Interested individuals should send a CV and statement of interest by Feb. 5. Further information on the details to be included in the statement of interest are available at www.nserc.ca/programs/ethics/english/nomination_e.htm.
