(September 6, 2001, Gazette)
Memorials Board of Regents has approved the creation
of the Memorial University Recreation Complex (MURC), an entity that will
operate all the recreation facilities on the St. Johns campus.
The centrepiece of the complex is Memorials new Field
House. The $13-million sports and recreation facility is scheduled to
open January 2002. The new facility will feature walking and running tracks,
multi-purpose courts and seating for 2,000 spectators. Funding for the
construction of the Field House was one of the objectives of the Opportunity
Fund, the universitys successful fund-raising campaign that concluded
last year.
MURC will also include the Aquarena/Canada Games Park, Inc.
(pools, Fitness Centre, squash courts, outdoor field), as well as recreation
facilities housed in the Physical Education Building (pool, squash courts,
gymnasium, Strength and Conditioning Centre), the Splash Facility at Long
Pond and the universitys outdoor playing fields.
The $1.4 million in operating funding required for the MURC
will come in large part from a new $40-per-semester recreation fee to
be charged to all students attending the St. Johns campus, effective
January 2002.
