The Memorial University Alumni Association has named retired professor
and campus food bank co-founder Noel Veitch its Alumnus of the Year
for 2001. A familiar face around campus and at convocation for over
30 years, Mr. Veitch will be fêted at a special celebration
at the School of Music on Nov. 7.
Tribute 2001: A Celebration of Alumni Spirit marks a departure from
past alumni awards dinners. The event will be produced and hosted
by Spirit of Newfoundland productions, and will include a program
of music, skits and special tributes to the guest of honour.
Noel Veitch graduated from Memorial in 1959 with a BA (Ed.) and returned
a few years later to join the Faculty of Education, where he taught
speech communication. He also holds a M.Ed. from St. Francis Xavier
University and an MA from the University of Michigan.
A popular professor, he retired from the faculty after 31 years, and
has spent much of his retirement continuing the tireless volunteer
work that he began at Memorial.
Mr. Veitch is the co-founder of the campus food bank and maintains
a very active role as coordinator of that organization. He is a volunteer
driver with Meals on Wheels, a member of the board of directors of
the Positive Thinkers Club, member of the St. Johns Metro chapter
of the Memorial Alumni Association, and the MUN pensioners representative
on the advisory committee of the Employee Assistance Program.
Mr. Veitch has also been marshal of convocation at Memorial since
1997 and is a founding member (violin and viola) of the Newfoundland
Symphony Orchestra (NSO). Earlier this year he won The Telegram/Hotel
Newfoundland NSO Achievement Award in recognition of outstanding contribution
and dedication to the NSO. He also garnered the 2001 MUN Volunteer
Award of Exemplary Service.
Tribute 2001 will celebrate the many facets of Mr. Veitchs life
and work. In a tip of the hat to his musical contributions,
the evening will include performances by students from the School
of Music as well as members of Spirit of Newfoundland. Significantly,
since 2001 is also the International Year of the Volunteer, Tribute
2001 will toast the volunteer spirit of the Memorial community in
general.
Colleagues, former students, fellow volunteers and the general public
are all welcome to attend Tribute 2001 at the D. F. Cook Recital Hall
on Nov. 7. For more details or to purchase tickets, contact the Office
of Alumni Affairs and Development at 737-4354, toll-free at 1-877-700-4081
