Department of Fisheries and Oceans
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is introducing the Subvention
Research Grants Program, a key component of the Academic Science Subvention
Program. The intent of the DFO Subvention Research Grants Program is to
supplement and encourage ongoing university research programs in areas
of interest to the DFO as well as to fund new projects that are directed
specifically to DFOs research needs. One-time grants of up to $15,000
will be awarded for short-term projects or to supplement or provide start-up
funds for longer-term projects. A total of $300,000 is available for the
pilot. Multi-year funding will be considered within the expanded DFO Subvention
Research Grants Program next year. For further information, please contact

Petro-Canada Young Innovator
The Petro-Canada Young Innovator Awards Program is intended to recognize,
promote and support outstanding and innovative new faculty researchers
at Memorial whose work impacts positively on their departments and whose
research has the potential to be of significance to society at large.
The award is open to faculty from any discipline. Nominations or applications
must be submitted in duplicate to the Office of Research by Dec. 1. For

Addiction and Mental Health
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health offers a number of postdoctoral
fellowships each year to provide fellows with a comprehensive training
program in the fields of addiction and mental health and with training
in research techniques. Appointments are for one year and are subject
to renewal for a second year. The deadline for applications is Dec. 14.

NSERC/Natural Resources Canada
NSERC and the Energy Sector of Natural Resources Canada have introduced
a new program called Novel Next Generation Technology Initiative in Energy
Research and Technology Related to Greenhouse Gas Mitigation under the
Climate Change Action Plan 2000. Basic research will help develop new
concepts and ideas that could lead to novel greenhouse gas mitigation
technologies. Proposals are expected to be for projects of two- or three-years
duration that do not exceed $100,000 annually. The deadline for receipt
of applications for the first competition is Feb. 1, 2002. The program

Atlantic health promotion
The AHPRC at Dalhousie University will host the 11th International Conference
on Personal Relationships from July 5-8, 2002 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The biennial conference is a joint venture of the International Society
for the Study of Personal Relationships and the International Network
on Personal Relationship. The program committee invites proposals for
papers, symposia, posters or interest groups. Submissions must be sent
electronically by completion of the online submission form. To access
