Keith Nicol, Environmental Studies Unit at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, recently collected two silver medals at the provincial cross country ski championships held in Corner Brook, Feb. 16-17, 2002. Mr. Nicol runs the Winter Outdoor Pursuits program within Environmental Studies and his students learn about all aspects of nordic skiing and safe winter travel. The medals were in the 10 km classic and 10 km freestyle (skating) races in the Masters 3 division.

The medical school’s annual Monte Carlo Night brought in over $36,500 this year, and cheques were distributed last month to eight charities. The Newfoundland and Labrador Spina Bifida Association and the Burin Peninsula Health Care Foundation each received $8,100. Real Time Cancer and the St. Anthony Fire Department were given $4,100 each. Cheques for $3,600 went to the Communities Food Bank (Bonavista), the Grace Sparkes House and the Sacred Heart School Breakfast Program. The Special Olympics (Newfoundland and Labrador division) received $2,250.

Margaret Miller is the new research marketing manager of the Faculty of Medicine’s Research/Marketing Development Office. She previously was managing director for Bio-East, the Biotechnology Network for Newfoundland and Labrador. In her new role she will build a marketing and development plan for medicine to increase funding for basic and clinical medical research. The operation of this office, which began in 2000, is made possible by an Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency Business Development grant.

Dr. Alice Collins will be the acting dean of the Faculty of Education until June 30, 2002. Dr. Barbara Burnaby, dean of the Faculty of Education, has accepted a secondment to the Office of the Associate Vice-President (Academic) during that time and will be conducting research into the means of support for international students.
