Dr. James P. Feehan, Economics, has been elected to the executive council of the Canadian Economics Association. Dr. Feehan is to serve a three-year term.

Dr. Niall J. Gogan, Chemistry and chair of the Environmental Science Program, was recently elected to the board of the Newfoundland Environmental Industries Association. As well, Dr. Gogan is the Memorial representative on the APICS Environmental Studies Committee.

Dr. Jon Lien, honorary research professor in biopsychology, has been selected to chair the minister of fisheries and oceans Advisory Council on Oceans. The council assists the federal minister in implementing the Oceans Act by providing independent expert advice on balancing economic, environmental and social goals for sustainable development; managing increasing complexity and diversity of ocean uses; and engaging communities and stakeholders in making decisions that affect them.

Dr. Gerald L. Pocius, folklore, was recently appointed to a two-year term to the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. He will serve on the Sectoral Commission on Culture, Communication and Information. This group is made up of experts from government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector throughout the country. Dr. Pocius will work with this commission to advise the executive committee on Canada’s participation in current UNESCO programs, especially in the area of heritage. He will also continue to advise the CCU on the ongoing preparation of a UNESCO convention dealing with intangible heritage.
