(June
13 , 2002, Gazette)
Dr.
Marilyn Porter, Womens Studies, and Phyliss Artiss, English have
collaborated on a project titled Women's Experience of Reproductive Health
in the Family: A Comparative Life Story Project.
The National Sciences and Engineering Research
Council (NSERC) of Canada awarded Memorial and C-CORE $4.6 million in
research funding through its 2002 competition.
NSERC research grants are awarded in three categories: discovery grants
designated for research equipment grants allotted for research tools and
instruments and a third category funding major facilities access.
This year, 100 of Memorials researchers received the next installments
of their on-going grants, while 57 others received renewal or new grants.
In the case of renewal grants, Memorials results were particularly
strong; 98 per cent of applications for renewal were accepted for funding,
an increase over the 79 per cent renewal success achieved in 2001.
Nine researchers were awarded their first NSERC grants in this years
competition. Congratulations are extended to: Dr. David Thompson, Chemistry;
Dr. Michael Slawinski, Earth Sciences; Dr. Kurt Gamperl, Ocean Sciences
Centre; Dr. John Lewis, Physics and Physical Oceanography; Dr. Pei Jun
Guo, C-CORE; Drs. Amgad Hussein, George Mann, and John Shirokoff, Engineering
and Applied Science; and Dr. Daniel MacPhee, Medicine. A complete listing
of all NSERC grants received (on-going, renewed, and new) appears below.
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) also supported
the research effort at Memorial. Thirteen researchers were provided with
further installments in their existing grants while seven new grants totaling
just over $650,000 were awarded. Congratulations to new SSHRC grantholders:
Dr. Lisa Rankin, Anthropology; Dr. Philip Gardner, English; Dr. Marilyn
Porter, Sociology, together with Dr. Phyllis Artiss, English; Drs. Jeffrey
Parsons and Jeffrey Pittman, Business Administration; Dr. Kati Szego,
Music; and Dr. Shelly Birnie-Lefcovitch, Social Work.
