Climate Change Action Fund
The Science Liaison Office for the Climate Change Action Fund has issued a call for proposals directed towards the addressing of gaps in our knowledge of climate system processes. Funding of approximately $1.2 million has been allocated for the competition. Support will be provided for projects to be carried out during the period June 1, 2002, to March 31, 2004. It is expected that up to 10 projects will be supported. Information on potential areas of research under this proposal call is available at www.ec.gc.ca/climate/CCAF-FACC/

Deadline extension
The University College of Cape Breton has advised that they have extended their deadline on the call for proposals for papers and panel suggestions for their third annual Festival of Community Economics being held from June 13-15, 2002, in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Proposals will now be accepted up to Feb. 28. This year’s theme is From Mondragon to America: Community Economic Development and the Knowledge-Based Economy. Hospital for Sick Children
The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation funds research projects with a pediatric focus, open to investigators across Canada. Currently the external grants program is divided into two applicant streams: New investigators and innovative investigations. The new investigators program is designed for researchers who are in the early stages of their careers (less than six years since first academic appointment). Innovative investigations are intended for experienced researchers whose projects show a high degree of innovation. Letter of intent deadline date for the innovative investigations is March 1. New investigators do not require a letter of intent. The deadline date for full applications for both programs is April 30.

Council on ethics
The National Council on Ethics in Human Research (NCEHR) is seeking nominations for candidates to be considered for appointment to council or to one of its committees. Terms are for three years, renewable once upon invitation. Council and committee members serve in an individual capacity. Individuals may self-nominate by sending a letter expressing their interest in serving and a CV in either French or English. Information about NCEHR is available at www.ncehr-cmerh.org. The deadline for submission is March 7.

Health services award
The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) is seeking nominations for the Health Services Research Advancement Award. The award is open to men and women and teams or organizations that have made either contributions over many years to the health services research community or a single major contribution with ongoing relevance. Contributions may be as a decision maker, a sponsor, a researcher, a methodologist, a communicator, an educator, an author, a champion or other role as deemed appropriate by the selection committee. Awards for science promotion
Nominations are invited for the Michael Smith Awards for Science Promotion. The awards will honour up to five outstanding people or organizations that make science and technology interesting and accessible to all Canadians. Any individual, organization or company in Canada may be nominated for the award. Individual winners will receive a personal award of $5,000 while winning organizations will receive $10,000 to further science promotion activities.
