Strategic
literacy plan
The provincial Department of Education welcomes attendance at
a teleconference presentation on Words to Live By, a Strategic
Literacy Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador. The plan will guide
future literacy work and the teleconference session is being
offered for the benefit of organizations seeking financial support
for project initiatives. Participants can register for one of
two sessions to be held on Nov. 29 and Dec. 6. A teleconference
session on proposal writing is also available, to be offered
on Dec. 6 and Dec. 13. For further information, contact Helen

Call for
proposals
The Sustainable Forest Management Network has issued a call for
proposals for 2001-2002. Details are available under Research
Program/Call for proposals at website www.ualberta.ca/sfm.
The deadline for new project proposals is Dec. 1, 2000 while
renewal applications are due Jan. 31, 2001.
NATO
fellowships
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Euro-Atlantic
Partnership Council (EAPC) are offering research fellowships
for the period June 2001 to June 2003 in support of research
leading to the publication on topics relevant to the North Atlantic
Alliance. Each fellowship will be awarded the total amount of
240,000 Belgian francs or its equivalent inclusive of all travel
costs. The deadline for applications is Dec. 31.
Call for
abstracts
The LAM Foundation is inviting the submission of abstracts for
LAMposium 2001 to be held in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 30-April
1, 2001. Abstracts on all aspects of lymphangiroleiomyomatosis
(including basic and clinical science, epidemiology and social,
biobehavioral, psychosocial and educational aspects) are welcomed.
Abstracts on basic science topics that are potentially applicable
to LAM (such as areas of smooth muscle biology or the biochemistry
of LAM-related gene products) are also welcome. The deadline
for submission of abstracts is Jan. 8, 2001.
Macnaughton
conservation scholarships
World Wildlife Fund Canada is inviting applications for its 2001
Macnaughton Conservation Scholarships. Two scholarships of $5,000
are awarded annually to graduate students in either the first
year of a masters program or the first two years of a Phd.
program. The students must be engaged in research on either
plants or animals at risk in Canada or on a wild habitat in Canada
that is a priority for protection. The deadline for submission
of applications is Jan. 15, 2001.
Canadian
northern studies awards
The Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies
(ACUNS) offers a variety of awards to encourage student research
on Canadas North. The awards include: Etuangat Inuit History
Prize; special bursaries for northern residents; studentships
in Northern Studies; Caribou Research Award; research support
opportunity in Arctic environmental studies; and Cooperative
Award. The application deadline for all programs is Jan. 31,
