SSHRC and NSERC grants
for Memorial academics

Funding for research

Five faculty researchers are boasting new SSHRC research grants as a result of the latest SSHRC grants competition round. Two of these had recently held SSHRC funding. Dr. Priscilla Renouf, Department of Anthropology, received a three-year research grant of $92,962 for her research on prehistoric settlement, subsistence, and environment at Port au Choix, Newfoundland, while Dr. Andrew Luchak of the Faculty of Business Administration received three years of support totaling $72,300 in support of his research on the role and function of occupational pension plans in Canada.

Also receiving funding under the competition were Dr. Kam Hon Chu, Department of Economics, who received $17,274 over three years for research into bank mergers, banking regulations and capital accumulation; Dr. Kim Parker, Department of Religious Studies, was awarded $40,103 over a three-year period in support of research on the influence of the Bible on the development of liberalism: John Locke and Genesis; and Dr. Ivan Emke, Social and Cultural Studies, was awarded $22,165 over a three-year period for a study titled, Forging a Professional Identity: a Case Study in the Occupational Socialization of Funeral Directors and Embalmers.

$4.9 Million from NSERC
The results of the 2001-2002 NSERC grants competition brought an additional $4.9 million to researchers at Memorial. This competition covered the research grants, equipment, and major facilities access programs. In addition to installments of continuing grants, 22 researchers received renewal grants and four new faculty members were successful in competing for their first NSERC research grants.
