CIHR seeks input
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research is seeking input from the research community on two subjects. The first is on the report from CIHR's Working Group on Programs and Peer Review. Input may be provided by visiting www.cihr.ca/news/forums/forum_menu_e.shtml and selecting "Working Group on Programs and Peer Review." The second area where feedback is sought is on the electronic services that the community would like to see offered by CIHR. A number of the most frequently suggested services have been listed and input on these may be provided through the Web site address provided above.

CHSRF develops links page
The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) has created a comprehensive links page on their website which provides links to associations, databases and other data retrieval resources, evidence-based healthcare resources, funding agencies, government agencies, health ministries, journals, and research centres. The links page is available at www.chsrf.ca/english/whatsnew/links/index_e.html.

New Research Directory
The Office of Research has released an updated edition of the Research Directory which lists the areas of research of faculty members at Memorial. A copy has been provided to the departmental office of all academic units and it is also available on the Office of Research's Web site (select the Research Expertise and Activity link under the Research at Memorial University section).

NSERC Strategic Grants
Researchers intending to apply under the upcoming NSERC strategic grants competition in mid-April are reminded that there are changes to the format of Form 101, Part II, and that applicants are not required to complete the Strategic Project Self-Assessment Report. Applicants should refer to the instructions on the NSERC Web site at www.nserc.ca (under Program News). The printed application instructions from the 2000 competition should not be used.

ISA request for proposals
The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) invites applications for arboriculture research in Canada. Grants of up to $15,000 are available. Submissions of proposals must be postmarked no later than March 31. For further information please contact the ISA Ontario Office at 519-376-1882 for application forms or Allan Fyfe Equipment Ltd. at 905-669-1313.

SSHRC defers KBE competition
SSHRC has advised that it will defer acceptance of applications under the strategic theme of Challenges and Opportunities of a Knowledge-based Economy (KBE). The deadline for submission of a letter of intent had originally been set for April 1, but SSHRC has decided to hold off on the competition until the guidelines for the new major research initiative concerning the new economy have been developed. At that time, a new competition under the KBE Strategic theme will be announced.

System-on-chip (SOC) research infrastructure
The Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) has provided funding in the amount of $16 million to Queen's University and its partner universities (one of which is Memorial) for a system-on-chip (SOC) research network. Researchers in the areas of telecommunications, computing, robotics, sensors, and biotechnology may be interested in the research infrastructure and collaborative opportunities that will be available through the network. Awards for science promotion
Nominations are invited for the Michael Smith Awards for Science Promotion. The awards will honour up to five outstanding people or organizations that make science and technology interesting and accessible to all Canadians. Any individual, organization or company in Canada may be nominated for the award. Individual winners will receive a personal award of $5,000 while winning organizations will receive $10,000 to further science promotion activities. The deadline for nominations is April 15.

Request for proposals
PRECARN is inviting proposals for industry-led collaborative research projects in the broad area of Intelligent Systems. Applications will initially be through a proposals concept document which is due June 1 with full proposal's due on July 6. PRECARN is a member-owned industrial consortium that supports industrially-relevant, market-oriented research and development. PRECARN's mission is to make Canadian firms more globally competitive by promoting the development and use of intelligent systems technologies and expertise.
